Smoke Alarm Safety: Your First Line of Defense

Smoke alarms are one of the most effective tools for preventing fire-related injuries and deaths. A working smoke alarm more than doubles your chances of surviving a home fire by providing early warning - when seconds count.

Why Smoke Alarms Matter

1. Early Warning Saves Lives

Smoke spreads rapidly, often faster than fire itself. A working smoke alarm alerts you at the first sign of danger, giving you critical time to escape safely.

2. They Detect Hidden Danger

Fires often start in places you can’t immediately see - inside walls, in the attic, basement, or on another level of the home. Smoke alarms detect and alert you to danger, even when you’re asleep or unaware of any visible signs.

Where to Install Smoke Alarms

To ensure full coverage and protection:

  • Inside every bedroom

  • Outside each sleeping area

  • On every level of the home, including the basement

  • In living areas, such as dens or family rooms

  • Near stairways for upper and lower level detection

In larger homes, additional alarms may be necessary for full coverage.

Maintenance Tips

1. Test Alarms Monthly

  • Press the test button on each alarm to confirm it’s working properly.

2. Replace Batteries Annually

  • For battery-operated alarms, replace batteries at least once a year - or immediately if the alarm begins to chirp.

  • Use daylight saving time changes as a reminder to check batteries.

3. Replace the Entire Alarm Every 10 Years

  • Smoke alarms become less reliable with age. Check the manufacturing date on the back and replace the unit if it’s over 10 years old.

4. Keep Alarms Clean

  • Dust and debris can interfere with the sensor. Gently vacuum or dust around the unit regularly.

Special Considerations

  • For individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing: Use alarms equipped with bed shakers, strobe lights, or low-frequency sound.

  • Interconnected alarms (wired or wireless): When one sounds, they all sound - alerting everyone in the home simultaneously.

Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Don’t wait for a fire to discover your smoke alarm isn’t working. Regular testing, proper placement, and timely replacement ensure your home and loved ones are protected. Early warning gives you the best chance to escape and survive.
